Sticking to Your Exercise Plan on the Road

In the past month or so I've noticed a trend of my current clients being forced to travel for work, traveling more frequently for vacations, as well as some of our newer clients here at Fitness Mastermind of whom are interested in training but are sincerely concerned about how frequent they travel out of town and even out of country, affecting their training and workouts. After noticing the recent trend of clients and potential clients traveling so often, it had me assessing the fitness challenges we all face when traveling and breaking our exercise and eating routines.  After doing some recent research on this exact issue, I began reading through an online US Airways article, where I found two websites that are very helpful, especially for people who often travel for business.

·         http://www.athlethicmindedtraveler.com will assist you not only to find hotels with exercise facilities, but also nearby gyms, running routes, golf courses and healthy places to eat.

·         http://fitforbusiness.com is another web site that will also help you find hotels and specialty activities nearby, such as Pilates and Yoga.

Some hotels such as the Westin, offer services like a “Running Concierge.” Basically, the hotel hires someone who leads a running group every morning. Some resorts have classes and personal trainers on site. Check with your preferred hotel if they offer these services. While being away, there are other things you should consider in other to stay in shape.

For example:

  • If you are not late for a flight, while at the airport, do not take the escalator, or the moving walkway.
  • Wear flat shoes and walk the whole terminal. If you have to wear heals for your next destination, you can always put them in a carry on.
  • Eat a meal before leaving home if you are taking a long flight and bring a snack, such as Kashi bars (they are the most “natural” ones) and a fruit.
  • In the airplane, order water. Staying hydrated will keep you from feeling “puffy” after a flight. Fruit juices might sound healthier, but one quarter of a cup of fruit juice equals one fruit serving, and most fruit juice cans have 4 servings or more. That is just too much sugar at once that will, in turn, spike your insulin levels, making you hungrier and more tired sooner.
  • When eating out, if you cannot bring half of your food back with you as you would normally do at home, eat until you are satisfied, cover the entire plate with a napkin and push it aside until the waiter takes it to avoid picking at the rest. Skip the dessert.
  • If at the beach, go for walks on the sand. Walking or running on the sand will burn 20 to 50% more calories than walking or running on flat surfaces.
  • Bring exercise bands if you do not have access to a gym. If you’re working with a trainer ask them to put together a brief body-weight and tube/band routine, but if you’re not working with a trainer simply Google “resistance band workouts” and you’re sure to find more than enough to fit your schedule and needs.

Keeping an exercise and eating routine while away is tough, but it shouldn’t ruin your travel experience. As long as you keep your indulgences moderate and try moving as much as you can, going back to your normal lifestyle will not be such a trepidation.

If you are a frequent traveler and have the same troubles keeping your fitness program in line, contact Fitness Mastermind now and let us put together your custom-tailored fitness program to keep you fit wherever you go.
