Summer Shape Shifter & Free Boot Camp Workouts!

A good workout is like an expensive suit, it has to be tailored to achieve a perfect fit, to maximize the effect, to get the most for your time invested. Pigeon-holing exercisers into classes or cookie-cutter programs cannot best serve each individual.  In my experience, one of the things you have heard a million times but we all seem to continue to overlook is the most important factor here: every person is best served by a training regimen based on that person’s individual goals, wants, strengths, limitations, etc., versus some group plan. Although group fitness options such as Boot Camps can offer a big benefit to the feasibility-factor of the task at hand, you still have to outweigh the results/time and see whether you are actually saving any $$$ at all by going with a group fitness Boot Camp or doing some one-on-one Personal Training. Example:
  • Boot Camp: $200/month
    • Results desired=6-8 months
  • Personal Training: $717.60/month
    • Results desired=2 months
Again, the above is simply an example of not only measures but pricing as well. But assuming were true, you can clearly see that you will pay  $500 less a month to do Boot Camp instead of Personal Training. In contrast, it could potentially take 6-8 months to achieve these “desired results,” as opposed to 2 months. In other words:
  • Boot Camp will take 4x longer to achieve the desired results; HOWEVER
  • Personal Training can achieve the same results in ¼ the time, but with 3 ½ x the cost of the Boot Camp.
Make sense? The best method of assessing whether your fitness Boot Camp you’re considering signing up for is “up to snuff” with being able to achieve one-on-one benefits while in the group setting? Upon inquiring about the Boot Camp and considering a consultation, take a look at how the Trainer treats you. What do we mean? Most will immediately notice it but will only assume it is “the norm” of how the Trainer should be/act, but only as a result of a lack of knowledge about it. When you speak with the Trainer or even possibly go to meet and consult with them the first time, take a step back and note whether you’re being treated like a “piece to a puzzle” being a group fitness class generating high revenue over short periods of time (1 hour), or did the Trainer do his/her job and make you feel like the puzzle that they are trying to put together? If the trainer put you first and began taking that time focused solely on you, you might have a winner!

Still not sure what is the right fitness program for you? Everyone is familiar with the details of what a one-on-one Personal Training session entails, but let’s take a quick look at how they differ from today’s version of Fitness Boot Camps.

A Fitness Boot Camp is a type of physical training program conducted by gyms, Personal Trainers, and also former military personnel. In the past several years, Fitness Boot Camps have grown in popularity for various reasons, and have continued to grow in both the number of trainers/instructors teaching them and the number of people interested in them. Boot Camp training often combines running, interval training, and many other exercises using weights and/or body weight to lose bodyfat, increase cardiovascular efficiency, increase strength, and help people get into a routine of regular exercise. Most will offer nutrition advice as well, but few are Certified Nutritionists or Registered Dieticians and therefore have the capability to do so or even legally are allowed to do so. These types of group exercise programs are called "Boot Camp" because it trains groups of people, typically outdoors, and is likely similar to military basic training.

The term "boot camp" is currently used in the fitness industry to describe group fitness classes that promote fat loss, camaraderie and team effort. They are designed to push people a little bit further than they would normally push themselves in the gym alone or in other traditional group exercise classes such as step aerobics or pilates. Most Boot Camps are often organized outdoors in parks using bodyweight exercises like jogging, sprinting, plyometrics, push-ups, pull-ups, squats, lunges, calisthenics, burpees, intermingled with running and competitive games. The idea is that everyone involved works at their own pace as they team up and work towards one goal, either in pairs, small teams of three or four, or even two teams head on. The key advantage of most Fitness Boot Camps is that the large group dynamic will often help motivate the participants.

There is obviously no shortage of Fitness Boot Camps out there now days, just go to your favorite search engine and checkout the ads and more than likely at least one (if not half) of them are local Boot Camps advertising some cockamamie story for next to nothing. Why the sudden surge in the past few years? It’s not just the rising increase in popularity, you also have a number of other unconsidered factors at hand here:

  • Unstable Economy: Lack of overhead for the trainer=more $$$ in his/her pocket.
  • Decreased Risk and Accountability: No Certification legally required and nobody to watch over them to ensure safety of clientele.
  • More $$$, Less Time: They pack their camp as full as possible caring less and less about each individual.
Fitness Mastermind Boot Camps are 180 degrees different, and for good reason via experience and client/camper feedback. When I taught my first few Boot Camps, I conducted them just as they textbook said I should, just how everyone else was, and was convinced Boot Camps just weren’t for me. Luckily I had a phenomenal group of people who explained to me that they loved doing some of my other group classes, group personal training, and even some of the one-on-one personal training. At this point I had an epiphany: I can essentially use my personal training methodology and practices in my boot camps, but first I had to correct a few things.
  • Cut camps down to 8-12 participants max: Ensures low trainer to client ration (similar to teacher/student ratio)
  • Engaging design to ensure client/camper attention & enjoyment:The average adult attention span is 11 seconds for men, 14 for women. Do the math.
Since then I have developed numerous formats of which are engaging, produce results relative to that of personal training, and 180 degrees modifiable on both ends of the spectrum of difficulty. Although the above gives a clear description of how our Fitness Boot Camps are different we understand how hard it is to see the passion, creativity, enjoyment, and uniqueness that has taken all of our campers/clients to and beyond their desired fitness without experiencing it first hand. I can tell you all day long how fun it is to fly a helicopter, but until you do yourself all you have is a description from me on why it is phenomenal. Therefore, I not only welcome you to come experience our passion for yourself and hopefully create a passion of your own for fun fitness, but also feel so strongly you will join the addiction we’re going to give you a no obligation week-FREE pass! Just call or email HERE and receive yours.

Bonus: Summer Shape Shifter Samples
Over the past several years of doing my Boot Camps I've developed a "playbook" of fitness programs, combining the timed sets of suspension training (etc.) combined with other cutting edge systems, methodically pushing the envelop on fitness, sports performance, body sculpting and weight loss. Allowing all-purpose and completely modifiable sets to lead the way, we are able generate highly individualized programs on a daily basis, using everything from suspension training to yoga, for both our Boot Camp and Personal Training clients. I have developed several different formats of which are functional for both time, exercise completion, group numbers and results over the past several years. But for now, I will include two of my camper’s favorites simply to demonstrate the differences between two equally challenging and beneficial, yet different Boot Camp exercise formats.

Below are two sample workouts for you that were generated for one of my recent Boot Camps. Full of male and female clients with the majority aiming for a drop in body fat, sculpt and tone specific areas, as well as achieve general health and fitness, but with 45 minutes to get it done.

Keys to remember with the Summer Shape Shifter Workout Formats:

  • Proper warm-up of walk/jog for 4-6 minutes
  • Perform 2-4 different quick functional stretches/movements to further activate your ligaments/tendons: Jumping jacks, Walking Knee-ups, Standing Windmills forward/backwards, etc.
    • Each of these should only be 20-25 seconds max
    • Only perform 1 set of each simply to get loose, not fatigue.
  • Once beginning the workout, aim to minimize your time between exercises. It will likely take 20-45 seconds after completing one exercise to get to the next exercise and be ready to begin it, and this amount of time essentially “transitioning” between exercises will suffice for the required rest for most.
    • Please note though that this is assuming your doctor has approved your current health for exercise
    • You control you own intensity throughout the workout; Therefore if you rest too much it can be just as detrimental as working too hard too fast. Find your healthy medium to “tote” the line of pushing just enough, but never crossing that line, and I assure you your results will come much faster than expected and you can still walk to your own car without being carried.
  • Once you have completed the workout, you will need to ensure a proper cool-down as well as a few stretches via static or functional.
    • Walk for 2-3 minutes until you can state your First, Middle and Last name followed by your birthday, without taking a breath. This is a clear sign that your heart rate has returned to a safe enough zone to ensure your body immediately starts repaying oxygen debt. Example: “ John Allen Doe, December 1st, 1955”
    • During your stretches whether static or functional, aim to stretch the 2-3 muscle groups that feel the most fatigued or did so during your workout. Don’t overstretch and don’t bother spending an additional 15 minutes stretching each and every muscle group, as this will only further increase the likelihood of soreness and possibly raise your HR back up.
Sample Workout #1- Format “Perfect 10”
This entire sequence consists of 10 total exercises of 45 second rounds, but is best to start off with 30-second rounds for the first few times. You don’t have to have an expensive gym timer (GymBoss, etc.), nor do you need to carry an old coach’s watch around your neck looking like you’re missing your whistle and daisy dukes. If you’re going to be at a public gym with others around, a simple stop watch will suffice ($5-$10 at Wal-Mart). If you’re going to be at your home or at a private gym, a simple cooking timer will prove the best as it not only lets you modify the time easily, but also start/restart each set quickly and easily, all the while only costing $1 at your local dollar store(assuming you don’t already have one).

Total A/B Workout Length: 42-45 minutes
Instructions:As you can see, you have 10 exercises labeled “1-10.” Start at #1 and perform this for 45 seconds (or 30 seconds if you’re just beginning to exercise). After completion of #1, immediately transition to exercise #2 begin. You will continue to do this, performing 1 set of each exercise before moving on to the next, until you reach exercise #10. After completion of exercise #10, take this quick minute to use the restroom or get a drink of water, then immediately return back to exercise #1 and make a second round through the 10 listed.

Modifications for Beginners?  ~Begin by only doing one round of the 1-10 exercises at 30 seconds
~After you’ve completed this workout a few times, you can increase the difficulty level by:
  • Increasing your time to 45 seconds on each station
  • Keep your time at 30 seconds, but complete two rounds of the 1-10 exercise
Modifications for Advanced Participants?
~
Increase your station time to 45 seconds each
~Add second round of workout
